Description

ACI Committee 370 and ACI Subcommittee 440-F are jointly developing the standard “Blast Design Guidelines for Externally Bonded FRP Applications” to provide guidance for designing concrete wall panels and concrete with masonry-fill wall panels with an application of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) that are subject to blast loading. Blast analysis including determining flexural resistance and shear resistance capacity of FRP retrofitted to strengthen concrete members to resist blast loads are discussed and tested showing various blast resistance test demonstrations. Good detailing practices to apply FRP to masonry in-fill wall panels spanning concrete supports to maximize flexural capacity. Preferred detailing of top-of-wall and bottom-of-wall anchors are provided to retrofitted FRP walls minimize rupturing or debonding during blast events.

Table of Contents

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe proposed upgrades tentatively titled ACI 370R- “Blast Design Guidelines for Externally Bonded FRP Applications”. Presentations discuss upgraded designs of FRP retrofitted concrete wall panels and concrete with in-fill masonry wall panels applied to one or both panel sides and enhanced effect in resisting blast loads.

2. Describe externally bonded FRP strengthening advantages to reinforced concrete slabs subject to blast loading.

3. Explain good column and wall detailing practices to improve effectiveness of FRP strengthening of columns and walls.

4. Recall FRP blast and impact resistant applications for non-slab geometries such as columns, box sections, and catching systems.
